Tight police presence in Ikere-Ekiti ahead of Ekiti state governorship election

Security personnel from the Nigerian Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were out in full force across Ikere-Ekiti on Saturday, as the town prepared for the upcoming Ekiti governorship election.

The town of Ikere-Ekiti holds significant importance in the election, being the hometown of both the All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy governorship candidate, Mrs Monisade Afuye, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Dr Oluwole Oluyede.

To enforce the restriction of movement order, the police barricaded all entry and exit points to the town, effectively sealing it off from the outside.

Vehicles and motorcycles attempting to enter the town were being stopped by the authorities, with residents only permitted to move around on foot, while all shops and restaurants remained closed.

However, journalists who had been accredited to cover the election were exempt from the restrictions, and were allowed to pass through the checkpoints in their vehicles, provided they displayed the requisite INEC stickers.
