Thirty-nine people caught up in Abuja pileup, according to Federal Road Safety Corps

A devastating multiple-vehicle crash occurred on the Kugbo Furniture Market axis of the AYA–Nyanya route in the Federal Capital Territory, involving a total of 39 people, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps. The crash, which took place on Monday at approximately 4:48pm, was confirmed by the Acting Corps Public Education Officer, Mrs Felicia Kalu, in a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja.

The collision involved six vehicles, including two tippers, a commercial bus, and private cars, resulting in a complex rescue operation that required prompt attention. The FRSC rescue team from Zebra 12 Unit arrived at the scene within four minutes of receiving the distress call and immediately commenced life-saving operations.

A trapped victim was successfully extricated from one of the heavily damaged tippers by officers, who then administered first aid before evacuating him to the National Hospital for further medical attention. This coordinated rescue effort was a testament to the FRSC's rapid response capabilities and commitment to saving lives.

Out of the 39 persons involved in the crash, two male victims sustained injuries ranging from bruises to fractures, with one receiving immediate first aid at the scene. The injuries, although serious, could have been worse if not for the timely intervention of the FRSC rescue team.

FRSC personnel worked tirelessly to stabilise the situation, prevent further casualties, and ensure the safety of other road users, demonstrating their dedication to protecting lives on the nation's roads. The Unit Commander led officers and marshals on the ground to coordinate rescue and traffic management operations, ensuring a swift and effective response.

Heavy-duty recovery equipment was deployed to remove the crashed vehicles obstructing the highway, allowing for the restoration of normal traffic flow along the busy corridor. Coordinated traffic control measures prevented a potential gridlock, showcasing the FRSC's ability to manage complex traffic situations.

Following the rescue and evacuation of victims, the vehicles involved in the crash were handed over to the Karu Police Division for further investigation, marking the final stage of the FRSC's rescue and clearance operations.
