Teachers' Union Warns Governments Over Slow Pace of Implementing N70,000 Basic Salary

The Nigeria Union of Teachers has urged states that have not yet implemented the new minimum wage of N70,000 to take immediate action, with NUT President Audu T. Amba issuing this warning during a recent interview in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Amba, who was represented by the union's National Social Secretary, Titilope Adebanjo, at the 19th quadrennial state conference for 2026, also called on Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq to raise the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years.

Amba emphasized that some states have failed to implement the newly approved minimum wage for teachers, prompting the union to put defaulting states on notice that they will not stand idly by and will mobilize their members to push for prompt action.

The NUT President commended President Bola Tinubu for his efforts to improve the welfare of teachers across the country, stating that the government is making a genuine effort to support teachers and expressing appreciation for these efforts.

Amba also expressed optimism that the federal government will address the issue of insecurity in conflict-prone areas, ensuring safer school environments by the next academic term, and noted that President Tinubu has assured the union that the government is working to ensure the safety of schools and their surroundings.

Additionally, Amba praised President Tinubu's leadership and wished him well, while also appealing for better economic conditions for teachers and acknowledging the government's efforts to support their welfare.

State Chairman of the NUT, Comrade Yusuf Agboola, praised the Kwara State Government for regularly paying teachers' salaries and addressing long-standing issues, including arrears owed by the State Universal Basic Education Board and the implementation of Teachers Specific Allowances.

Agboola specifically noted that the Kwara State Government has implemented Teachers Specific Allowances of 27.5 percent and 22 percent, demonstrating the state's commitment to supporting the welfare of teachers.
