Taraba University ASUU Calls Off Four-Week Industrial Action Following ₦500m Government Intervention

The Taraba State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has halted its month-long strike, thanks to a ₦500 million intervention by the state government, as confirmed by Dr. Joshua Mbave, the Chairperson of TSU ASUU.

This development follows a formal agreement between the union, the Non-Academic Staff Union, and Governor Agbu Kefas’ administration, which led to the suspension of the industrial action that commenced on February 18.

According to Dr. Mbave, a mutually beneficial agreement was reached with the state government, resulting in the suspension of the indefinite strike action initiated by the union.

Dr. Mbave expressed appreciation for Governor Kefas and other stakeholders who facilitated the agreement, allowing normal academic activities to resume, and also acknowledged the ₦500 million package aimed at settling part of the outstanding backlogs owed to staff.

Dr. Mbave emphasized the importance of the government fulfilling the terms of the agreement, stressing that consistency is vital for the university's long-term stability and the well-being of students and staff.

With the strike now suspended, academic activities are anticipated to restart across the TSU campus in the coming days.
