Tambuwal Explains Decision to Abandon PDP for ADC

Former Governor of Sokoto State and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, clarified his reasons for leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Thursday, stating that the move is a unified effort to safeguard Nigeria's democracy and ensure responsible governance.

This decision, made in conjunction with his political associates, was driven by a shared dedication to national advancement and visionary leadership, rather than personal ambition, according to Tambuwal, who spoke during the launch of a food distribution program for his loyal residents and supporters in Sokoto.

Tambuwal explained that Nigerians are increasingly seeking purposeful leadership that restores confidence in the political system, and his decision to defect was carefully planned after extensive consultations with experienced politicians and university scholars to assess the country's political trajectory.

These consultations, according to Tambuwal, revealed growing concerns that the current political path could lead Nigeria toward a one-party state, which is detrimental to a vibrant democracy, prompting his decision to join the ADC.

Tambuwal noted that the political landscape is becoming increasingly polarized between supporters of the present administration and citizens dissatisfied with the prevailing governance, corruption, and alleged incompetence across various levels of government, including Sokoto State.

He emphasized that politics should prioritize citizens' welfare, aspirations, and livelihoods, rather than the concentration of power among a few office holders, and cited recent elections in Lagos State, Katsina State, and Plateau State as examples of voters challenging entrenched political dominance.

Tambuwal assured his supporters that the ADC will not be deterred by intimidation or political pressure in its pursuit of credible leadership and defense of democratic values, and also expressed concerns about certain provisions in the amended Electoral Act 2022, particularly timelines for party primaries.

He called for further reflection to ensure fairness in the electoral process, and on his decision to leave the PDP, Tambuwal cited internal disarray and weakening party structures, which made it difficult for the party to function effectively.

Approximately 1,900 political stakeholders were consulted before a unanimous decision was reached to adopt the ADC as their preferred platform, according to Tambuwal, who expressed confidence that his new political alignment will strengthen democratic competition and provide Nigerians with credible alternatives ahead of future elections.
