Syrian Authorities Blame Hezbollah for Launching Artillery Attacks Across Border

Syrian state media reported on Tuesday that Iran-backed Hezbollah had launched artillery shells into Syrian territory from Lebanon during the overnight hours, as tensions escalate between Israel and the Lebanese Shia movement.

This development comes amid an ongoing conflict that has been intensifying between the two sides, with no signs of abating, according to Syrian army officials.

As stated by the Syrian army, artillery shells fired from Lebanon landed in the vicinity of the town of Serghaya, located west of Damascus, as reported by the state news agency SANA on Tuesday.

The Syrian army has accused Hezbollah of deliberately targeting its positions, citing observations of Hezbollah reinforcements at the Syrian-Lebanese border, which the army conveyed to the news agency.

In a statement released to SANA, the army declared that "The Syrian Arab Army will not tolerate any aggression targeting Syria", emphasizing its commitment to defending the country against external threats.

Lebanon became embroiled in the Middle East conflict last week, when Hezbollah launched an attack on Israel in retaliation for the killing of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during US-Israeli strikes.

Hezbollah and Israeli forces have engaged in clashes in eastern Lebanon in recent days, while Israel has conducted strikes across various parts of Lebanon, including the capital city of Beirut.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has publicly accused Hezbollah of seeking to "collapse" the state, whereas the head of the group's parliamentary bloc countered that it had "no other option… than the option of resistance".

Hezbollah had previously provided military support to former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown in December 2024 by an Islamist coalition hostile to the pro-Iranian Shia movement.

Since the overthrow of Assad, Hezbollah's supply routes from Syria have been severed, and both Lebanese and Syrian authorities have been working to combat smuggling activities across the porous border between the two countries.
