Supply of medications at Kano healthcare centers increases to exceed 90 percent, according to government representative

Drug availability in public health facilities in Kano has surged from 30 per cent to over 90 per cent in just three years, according to the Kano Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA).

The agency's Director-General, Mr Gali Sule, disclosed this information on Monday during a news conference in Kano, which was held to commemorate the third anniversary of Gov. Abba Yusuf’s administration.

The event coincided with the third anniversary of Sule's own appointment, on July 16, providing an opportunity for the agency to assess its performance and outline its future plans.

The DMCSA, tasked with procuring and distributing quality, affordable drugs and medical consumables to government-owned health facilities, has made significant strides under the current administration, Sule noted.

When the administration took office in 2023, drug availability in public health facilities stood at around 30 per cent, resulting in a shortage of essential medicines.

However, sustained government interventions have driven up the availability of medicines and medical commodities to over 90 per cent across the state, a feat that has garnered national recognition.

Sule described the achievement as unprecedented, stating that it was unimaginable that such progress could be made within a three-year timeframe.

The agency had inherited approximately N1.2 billion in debts owed to pharmaceutical suppliers, but managed to clear these liabilities by January 2026, a development that has bolstered suppliers' confidence and strengthened the state's medical supply chain.

This debt clearance has been hailed as a major milestone, and has earned Gov. Yusuf an Award of Excellence and Appreciation from the Association of Nigerian Industrial Pharmacists, which is set to be presented on July 16.

The award recognises Yusuf's commitment to settling the inherited debts, and is a testament to his administration's efforts to improve the state's healthcare system.

Activities marking the anniversary commenced with Quranic recitation and special prayers for Nigeria, Kano, Yusuf, the Ministry of Health, and other leaders.
