Stakeholders commend peace move over Warri delineation dispute

ASABA — Stakeholders have commended the Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo ethnic groups for embracing renewed peace following tensions linked to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) delineation of the Warri Federal Constituency in Delta State.

The Niger Delta Concerned Stakeholders for Accountable Security and Progress also praised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for mediating the dispute and ensuring what they described as an impartial and timely intervention that prioritised peace and development.

In a statement on Tuesday, the group’s leader, Enisuo Oruomoni, said the governor’s effort reflected leadership that “chooses peace over war and development over destruction,” adding that the outcome was a win for all parties involved.

The group also commended traditional rulers, chiefs, and ethnic leaders for opting for dialogue and rejecting misinformation and incitement.

“For us, this move reflects the doctrine of Oronto Douglas and the IYC founding fathers. It also aligns with Tompolo’s standard of choosing peace over war and development over destruction,” the statement read.

It urged residents of Warri to support their leaders and resist any attempt by individuals or groups to inflame tensions.

The stakeholders further called on security agencies to sustain pressure on those inciting violence, while urging government to convert the peace process into tangible development, including job creation and infrastructure projects.

“Peace without development will not last,” the group warned, adding that sustained progress was necessary to maintain harmony in the area.

Oruomoni appealed to residents to remain united, saying: “Warri has spoken: we choose unity, we choose law, we choose development.”
