Spotify has introduced a new verification system aimed at enabling listeners to differentiate between music created by humans and that generated by artificial intelligence, as the latter increasingly populates streaming platforms with synthetic tracks.

n

This system, dubbed "Verified by Spotify," features a green checkmark badge that will start appearing on artist profiles and search results in the coming weeks, indicating that a profile has been reviewed and meets Spotify's authenticity standards.

n

According to Spotify, profiles primarily showcasing AI-generated music or AI-created personas will not be eligible to receive the badge, as outlined in a recent blog post.

n

Spotify emphasized the importance of trusting the authenticity of music in the AI era, stating "In the AI era, it’s more important than ever to be able to trust the authenticity of the music you listen to."

n

To qualify for verification, artists must demonstrate ongoing listener engagement, adhere to Spotify's platform rules, and exhibit a genuine presence both on and off the platform, including elements like concert dates, merchandise, and linked social media accounts.

n

At launch, more than 99 percent of artists that listeners actively search for will be verified, representing hundreds of thousands of musicians, with the majority being independent, and spanning various genres and geographies.

n

The initiative comes amid growing concern within the music industry about AI-generated content overwhelming streaming catalogs, with competitor Deezer revealing that synthetic tracks now account for 44 percent of all new music uploaded to its service daily.

n

Major labels have also taken action, with Sony Music recently seeking the removal of over 135,000 AI-produced songs that mimicked its signed artists across streaming services.

n

Spotify is also introducing a new information section on all artist pages, whether verified or not, which will display career highlights, release patterns, and live performance history, likening the feature to nutritional labeling for food.

n

This announcement follows Spotify's first-quarter 2026 earnings report, which stated that the company's paying subscriber base had reached 293 million.
