Say political differences should not justify hostility or denial of rights

NNEWI — The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has expressed concern over the arrest and detention of activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, stressing that the strength of any nation is measured by how it treats both supporters and critics of those in authority.

The group also maintained that differences in political opinion should never become a basis for division, hostility, or the denial of citizens’ rights.

In a statement issued by its Director-General, His Lordship Alpha Justice Ikpeama, titled “UNIEC Worldwide Expresses Concern Over Arrest and Detention of Omoyele Sowore, Calls for Due Process, Justice and Protection of Democratic Values,” the council condemned the reported arrest of Sowore within court premises and his subsequent detention.

According to the council, every Nigerian, regardless of political affiliation, social status or personal opinion, deserves fair treatment and protection under the law.

“UNIEC Worldwide believes that in a democratic society, the rule of law, constitutional rights and due process must remain the foundation upon which all state actions are measured,” the statement said.

The group noted that Sowore remains a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political and civic space and argued that any action involving him or any other citizen must be handled transparently, professionally and in accordance with established legal procedures.

“UNIEC Worldwide recognises Mr. Omoyele Sowore as a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political and civic space, a public commentator and a participant in national discourse. Consequently, any action involving him or any other citizen must be handled with transparency, professionalism and respect for established legal procedures to preserve public confidence in democratic institutions,” it stated.

The council further emphasized that democracy thrives when differing opinions are accommodated rather than suppressed.

“As elders and custodians of peace, the Council reminds all authorities that democracy is strengthened not by suppressing differing opinions, but by encouraging responsible dialogue, tolerance, accountability and respect for fundamental rights and freedom,” the statement added.

UNIEC stressed that citizens’ ability to express concerns, participate in debates and contribute to national conversations remains a vital component of democratic governance.

The council also cautioned against actions or perceptions that could erode public trust in democratic institutions or create fears of selective justice.

“The strength of a nation is reflected in how it treats not only those who agree with the authorities, but also those who hold different views,” it said.

Calling on relevant authorities to ensure strict adherence to the rule of law, the council urged that any allegations or legal issues involving Sowore be addressed through established judicial processes.

n

“Where there are allegations or legal issues, they should be addressed through proper judicial processes rather than through actions that may be perceived as undermining democratic principles,” the group stated.

UNIEC further called on political leaders, civil society organisations and citizens to promote peace, maturity and constructive engagement in matters of national importance.

n

“Differences in political opinions should never become a reason for division, hostility or disregard for the rights of individuals,” the council said.

The group added that political power is temporary, while institutions and the values they uphold endure, stressing that leadership is ultimately judged by fairness, wisdom and responsibility in the exercise of authority.

Reaffirming its commitment to democracy and justice, UNIEC urged Nigerians to remain calm and committed to peaceful democratic processes as the country continues its pursuit of unity, stability and development.
