South Africa downs Nigeria 2-1, crushing Super Falcons' bid for World Cup berth

South Africa triumphed over Nigeria with a 2-1 scoreline in Casablanca on Thursday, thereby booking their spot in the preliminary round of the Inter-Confederation Playoff for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

This victory marked the end of Nigeria's Super Falcons' aspirations to qualify for the tournament, a first in their history, as their World Cup hopes were dashed.

Prior to this encounter, Nigeria had suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Cameroon in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals, while South Africa experienced a 2-1 loss to hosts Morocco at the same stage.

With the need for a win to stay in contention for the World Cup, South Africa took an early lead through Thembi Kgatlana, and captain Refiloe Jane later doubled the advantage in the second half.

Nigeria, despite creating numerous scoring opportunities, found it difficult to penetrate South Africa's defence, with goalkeeper Kaylin Swart making vital saves to preserve her team's lead.

A late-game penalty, resulting from Jane's handball, offered Nigeria a glimmer of hope when Christy Ucheibe successfully converted the spot-kick, reducing the deficit to 2-1.

However, South Africa managed to hold on during the six minutes of stoppage time, securing a crucial win that advances them to the six-team Inter-Confederation Playoff preliminary round.

The top two teams from this preliminary round will proceed, along with four teams that have received byes, and the winners of the final-round ties will then qualify for the World Cup in Brazil.
