Soldiers free 27 hostages, thwart kidnapping bids in Sokoto and Zamfara states

Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have rescued a total of 27 kidnap victims in Sokoto and Zamfara States, as part of their ongoing offensives against terrorists in the North West region.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Media Information Officer, the troops also foiled abduction attempts against several residents, and recovered livestock and motorcycles during a series of operations in the two states.

On 20 July 2026, troops from Forward Operating Bases Shagari and Sifawa launched an operation in Wanke and Kaura communities in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State, following reports of terrorist activity in the area.

The troops engaged the terrorists at Kaura community, using their superior firepower to compel the criminals to flee, and rescued six kidnap victims, as well as recovering livestock and two motorcycles.

The rescued victims were subsequently reunited with their families, marking a successful outcome to the operation.

On the same day, troops operating at Gandi, in collaboration with the State Security Community Guard Corps, rescued ten kidnap victims who had escaped from their abductors and were found wandering in the bush at Badanma community, Gandi Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The victims, who included men, women, and children, were handed over to community leadership and reunited with their families, thanks to the swift action of the troops.

On 21 July 2026, troops of Combat Team 12 OPFY responded to a distress call along the Gummi–Sokoto road, where terrorists had blocked the highway in an attempt to abduct commuters.

The troops engaged and pursued the attackers, rescuing 11 kidnapped persons and recovering one motorcycle, in a daring operation that showcased their bravery and professionalism.

The Theatre Command has commended the troops for their vigilance, professionalism, and swift response in securing the safe rescue of the victims.

The Command also expressed appreciation for the sustained support of the public, and the prompt provision of credible information, which has been instrumental in the success of the ongoing operations.

Citizens are being urged to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with security agencies, as the ongoing operations aim to progressively degrade terrorist and criminal networks across the theatre.
