Australian designer Katie Perry has emerged victorious in a lengthy trademark dispute with US pop sensation Katy Perry, gaining the right to sell clothing under her own name as of Wednesday.

The case began when designer Katie Perry alleged that the famous singer had committed trademark infringement, contending that she had established the "Katie Perry" brand before the musician's rise to global fame.

The singer countered that her music had already gained widespread popularity by the time the designer started selling clothes around 2008, and subsequently sought to cancel the Australian trademark.

In 2024, an Australian court ruled in favour of the singer, deciding that the clothing trademark should be cancelled, but this decision has now been overturned on appeal.

Australia's High Court has found in favour of the local designer, determining that there is little likelihood of confusion between the two Katie Perrys.

A representative for the singer stated that, despite the legal action, she "has never sought to close down" the Australian business, according to AFP.
