Shipping regulatory body calls for talks as cargo handlers protest outside MSC's offices in response to increased fees.

Akutah Pius, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers' Council, is advocating for freight forwarders to utilize dialogue as a means of resolving disputes in a constructive manner, warning against the potential disruption to the nation's economy that could result from industrial actions.

His appeal comes in response to the recent picketing of Mediterranean Shipping Company, MSC, offices by freight forwarders who are protesting the latest increase in shipping line tariffs, which has sparked tensions within the industry.

Despite the protests, the Council's attempts to engage with the aggrieved freight forwarders in discussions were met with resistance, with the protesters insisting that there is no basis for dialogue and vowing to continue their protest on Monday until the increased charges are reversed.

Akutah Pius emphasized that dialogue is the most effective and modern mechanism for resolving disputes, describing it as faster, more humane, and more productive than allowing anger to build up, and cautioned that prolonged industrial disputes in the maritime sector could have far-reaching consequences.

The potential disruption to port operations and the negative impact on trade and economic activities are among the concerns that could arise from prolonged industrial disputes, highlighting the need for a swift and peaceful resolution to the current standoff.

The Council has acknowledged the right of stakeholders to express their concerns, but has condemned the unprofessional conduct of some freight forwarders, particularly the act of blocking regulators from accessing the MSC premises to address the matter, which has hindered efforts to find a resolution.

In a similar protest over the same tariff increment a few weeks earlier, the Council intervened and successfully compelled MSC to suspend the collection of the disputed charges for two days while discussions were ongoing, demonstrating the Council's capacity to mediate and find a peaceful resolution.
