Senior undergraduate accused of fatally brutalizing peer in dispute over food supplies

Tension has enveloped Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, following the tragic death of 12-year-old JSS 2 student Ufokobong Edwin Godwin, allegedly due to bullying by a senior student over his refusal to share provisions.

The incident, which occurred before the Easter break, led to the deceased being hospitalized on Easter Sunday for a neck sprain sustained during the alleged torture, according to information gathered.

A student who lived in the same hostel as the deceased recounted the incident in Uyo, stating that a senior student approached the deceased for provisions during terminal examinations, but the deceased refused, insisting he didn’t have enough to share.

The senior student reportedly hit the deceased on the neck, causing him to go into a coma, after which he regained consciousness in the hospital and was taken back to school, according to the student who wished to remain anonymous.

When the holiday arrived, the parents picked up the deceased without being informed of any incident involving their son, possibly because the school did not consider the injury to be serious.

The anonymous student further revealed that the senior student hit the deceased on the neck until he fainted three times before other students intervened to rescue him.

After returning home, the deceased developed severe neck pains and was given pain relief medication by his parents, who were unaware that the incident was more than just ordinary pain.

The deceased's condition worsened, prompting his father to rush him to the hospital, where he eventually died on Easter Sunday.

According to the deceased's parents, he had started complaining of throat pain on Wednesday, and they had obtained medication for him, but his condition deteriorated, leading to his hospitalization and eventual death.

The hospital later confirmed that the deceased died from complications associated with blood clots around his throat, specifically in the neck area.

Police Public Relations Officer Timfon John promised to confirm the incident but had yet to respond at press time.

Principal of the school, Mr. Jude Ezeogu, confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate, and stated that the entire school is in a mourning mood, as the deceased was a Nigerian child and a member of the school community.

The school management committee is set to meet to discuss the matter and communicate the circumstances of the deceased's death.

The family of the deceased student has called on the Federal Government to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of their son, with the father of the deceased stating that he is seeking justice and will speak at the appropriate time.
