Senator Marafa dumps ADC for NDC, wishes former party well

ABUJA — Former senator representing Zamfara Central in the 7th and 8th National Assembly, Senator Kabir Marafa, has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), saying he wishes his former party well.

Marafa’s defection comes barely three weeks after he urged his supporters in Zamfara State to commence a registration drive in the ADC.

The move is part of ongoing political realignments ahead of the next election cycle, with analysts suggesting it could reshape party dynamics, particularly in the North-West geopolitical zone.

Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja at the residence of Senator Seriake Dickson during his formal reception into the NDC, Marafa said his decision was informed by policy-driven considerations centred on inclusion, equity, and internal democracy.

He explained that “careful reflection and deep consideration” of developments within the All Progressives Congress (APC), especially issues surrounding party congresses and leadership structure, influenced his decision to leave.

According to him, political participation must be rooted in fairness and opportunity.

“Politics is about inclusion, appreciation, and participation. Only when you are given the opportunity can you truly serve your people,” he said.

Marafa, who recalled his role in the emergence of the APC in Zamfara State, noted that the state contributed significantly to the party’s electoral success in 2015. He, however, expressed concern over what he described as a lack of commensurate recognition for those contributions.

He cited disparities in political appointments, particularly ministerial positions, arguing that such decisions should reflect both merit and contribution to party growth. He added that perceived imbalances in representation could weaken trust and cohesion within political parties.

The former lawmaker emphasised that his defection was not driven by personal ambition but by the need to align with a platform that reflects his principles of fairness, inclusion, and collective participation.

He also stressed the importance of internal democracy in strengthening Nigeria’s political system, urging parties to create enabling environments for members to contribute meaningfully.

While noting that patience and loyalty are essential in politics, Marafa said they must be matched with recognition and equitable treatment.

“Silence does not mean weakness. It often reflects patience, observation, and strategic thinking,” he added.

In his remarks, the National Leader of the NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson, who formally received Marafa into the party, described him as an experienced and principled politician whose entry would strengthen the party’s presence in Zamfara State and the wider North-West region.

Dickson said Marafa is expected to provide leadership, mobilise grassroots support, and contribute to the party’s vision of inclusive governance.

He added that the party is counting on him to help address critical challenges in Zamfara, particularly insecurity, while advancing development through policies focused on education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Dickson further noted that Marafa would play an active role in the party’s internal processes, including congresses and primaries, as well as efforts to expand membership and strengthen party structures.
