Senate hails Nigerian Army at 163, calls for stronger civil-military relations

ABUJA — The Senate has congratulated the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, officers, soldiers and veterans of the Nigerian Army on the occasion of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration, describing the anniversary as a significant milestone in the country’s military history.

The upper chamber also urged officers and soldiers to remain professional, steadfast and committed to their constitutional responsibilities, assuring them of the Senate’s continued support.

In a statement issued on Monday, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua (APC, Katsina Central), said this year’s celebration marks 163 years of the Nigerian Army’s service to the nation.

He noted that for more than a century, the Army has remained at the forefront of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security.

Commenting on the theme of the 2026 celebration, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” Yar’Adua said it reflects the Army’s constitutional mandate and the importance of strengthening its relationship with the public.

According to him, the theme highlights professionalism, accountability, innovation and service as essential elements of modern military operations.

He said national security depends not only on military capability but also on public trust, confidence and cooperation.

The senator paid tribute to troops deployed across the North-West, North-East and other operational theatres, commending their efforts in combating terrorism, banditry and other security threats.

He also honoured military personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

Yar’Adua reaffirmed the commitment of the Senate Committee on Army to providing legislative support, effective oversight and adequate resources to strengthen the Nigerian Army.

He said ongoing efforts, including the review of the Armed Forces Act and other legislative interventions, are aimed at ensuring the military has an effective legal framework, improved welfare and the capacity to address contemporary security challenges.

The lawmaker expressed optimism that the celebration would deepen public appreciation of the Army’s contributions, promote patriotism and strengthen civil-military relations across the country.
