Security concerns will subside following the 2027 elections, according to Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has attributed the recent surge in insecurity across the country to political motivations, citing the impending 2027 general elections as a key factor, and expressed confidence that the situation would improve after the elections.

Akpabio made these remarks yesterday at the official commissioning of a major tax administration facility by the Nigeria Revenue Service in Abuja, where he stated that the emerging security concerns should be viewed within the context of political activities gathering momentum across the country.

The Senate president asserted that some actors were deliberately sponsoring unrest to distract the administration, and that the rising attacks were part of broader efforts by political opponents unsettled by the administration’s growing acceptance across party lines.

He noted that President Bola Tinubu’s policies, particularly in revenue generation, fiscal reforms, and support for sub-national governments, have continued to attract governors and political actors, thereby reshaping the political landscape ahead of 2027, with the President now having close to 30 or more governors under his influence.

Akpabio expressed strong political backing for the President’s re-election prospects, declaring that Nigerians still saw Tinubu as indispensable to the country’s future, and that the administration’s record of reforms and infrastructure delivery continued to resonate with citizens.

According to Akpabio, the administration’s achievements, including numerous projects, demonstrate its commitment to the country’s development, and he defended recent economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy and tax restructuring, as necessary to stabilise public finances and reposition the economy.

He assured that the National Assembly would continue to support the administration’s policies, and urged Nigerians to remain patient as reforms took root, stating that the situation would ease after the electoral cycle, with the attacks and bombing expected to fizzle out two weeks after the general elections.

Akpabio also stated that Nigerians remained firmly behind President Bola Tinubu and would massively vote for him, despite what he described as distractions, and that the President’s influence had grown significantly, with many governors now under his influence.

In a show of support for the President, Akpabio said, "Nigerians cannot do without you in 2027," echoing sentiments he attributed to key government officials and stakeholders, and expressing confidence that the situation would improve after the elections.
