SDP didn’t withdraw from Ekiti gov election – Spokesperson

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has dismissed reports claiming its withdrawal from the Ekiti State governorship election scheduled for June 20, saying they are false and misleading.

The party, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Araba Aiyenigba, said its governorship candidate, Amb. Isaac Alade, remained in the race and would participate in the election.

Aiyenigba said that SDP was duly listed on the ballot by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and noted that Alade was among candidates who signed the commission’s peace accord ahead of the poll.

According to him, the reports of the party’s withdrawal are the handiwork of political opponents and individuals not recognised by the party.

He alleged that some individuals were attempting to sow confusion about the party’s participation in the election and urged members of the public to disregard such claims.

The party also accused INEC of denying it access to upload the names of its polling unit agents for the election.

Aiyenigba said that although the commission had provided an access code to the party’s national secretariat, its officials allegedly failed to open the portal required to upload agents’ details.

He expressed concern that the development could undermine the credibility of the electoral process and disenfranchise the party.

“SDP remains committed to participating in the election and providing a credible alternative platform for the people of Ekiti State,” he said.

Aiyenigba reaffirmed the party’s commitment to promoting credible elections, democratic governance and national development.
