Paul Scholes claimed his intention was not to offend former Manchester United team-mate Michael Carrick after posting a comment on social media that appeared to criticize the Old Trafford interim boss.

Responding to United's 2-1 defeat at Newcastle in the Premier League on the previous Wednesday, Scholes took to Instagram to express his thoughts on the team's recent performances.

Scholes wrote on Instagram, "Michael has definitely got something special about him, because United have been c**p last four games," in reference to the team's run of disappointing results.

This loss marked a first defeat for Carrick since he replaced the sacked Ruben Amorim in January, following a strong start to his tenure.

Under Carrick's leadership, United had climbed to third in the Premier League and were challenging for Champions League qualification after going unbeaten in his first seven matches prior to the Newcastle loss.

Scholes played alongside Carrick in United's midfield for seven years, and their old team-mate Patrice Evra criticized Scholes' comments, hoping that he "was hacked" and did not truly mean to offend Carrick.

Scholes spoke on 'The Good, The Bad and The Football' podcast with former United colleagues Wes Brown and Nicky Butt on Monday, attempting to make amends with Carrick.

Scholes stated, "Michael is one of the nicest people you will ever meet in football – he'd be the last person I would want to offend," in an effort to clarify his previous comments.

Scholes revealed that he had messaged Carrick directly, saying, "I never intended to upset you," and was reassured by Carrick that he was not upset by the comment.

Scholes believed that people had misinterpreted his statement, and that his intention was simply to point out that the team had not played well in their last four games, yet still managed to achieve results under Carrick's management.
