Saved Oriire students and staff will be monitored for 2 days, says Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced that the pupils and teachers rescued from captivity in Oriire Local Government Area will undergo medical observation for 48 hours before being formally handed over to the Oyo State Government.

This decision was made after the governor visited the rescued victims at the Headquarters of the 2 Division Nigerian Army Medical Services, Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan, where they are receiving medical care following their release.

Governor Makinde expressed his profound gratitude for the successful rescue operation, describing the victims' return as a moment of relief and thanksgiving for the entire state, saying "Today is a day of gratitude to Almighty God."

The governor confirmed that all 39 abducted pupils and five of the seven teachers had been successfully rescued and reunited with security personnel, bringing huge relief to their families and every resident of Oyo State.

Makinde commended the Nigerian Army, other security agencies, and all those involved in the rescue mission for their courage, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to securing the victims' safe return.

The governor acknowledged that the rescue operation came at a painful cost, with some security operatives losing their lives in the line of duty, and extended his heartfelt condolences to their families.

He stated that the people of Oyo State remain deeply grateful for the sacrifices and dedication of the security personnel, saying "these heroes laid down their lives in service to our nation, and we owe them an enduring debt of gratitude."

The condition of the rescued victims is a major concern, with many appearing physically exhausted and requiring comprehensive medical attention and psychosocial support to aid their recovery from the trauma of captivity.

According to the governor, "Freedom is the first step, but recovery is equally important," and the rescued victims will receive the best medical care, counselling, and rehabilitation necessary to help them recover fully.

The military authorities have advised that the victims remain under observation for the next 48 hours, after which a proper assessment will be conducted to determine their medical and psychological condition before they are formally handed over to the Oyo State Government.

Arrangements are underway to allow family members to visit the rescued victims at the military facility, with one of the rescued girls having repeatedly asked to see her mother since regaining freedom.

Governor Makinde urged Nigerians to remain united in confronting the nation's security challenges, stressing that periods of adversity should strengthen national resolve rather than create division.

The governor emphasized that "Security is a collective responsibility" and that unity, vigilance, and cooperation remain the strongest weapons against criminality.
