Rubio Rejects Claims That US Is Attempting to Bar Iranian Athletes From World Cup Participation

Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified on Thursday that the United States will not bar Iran from participating in the World Cup tournament it is hosting, following speculation about a potential replacement with Italy, which failed to qualify.
nRubio's comments came after an official suggested that Iran, a nation battered by war, could be swapped out with Italy in the tournament.
nThe issue with Iran's participation, according to Rubio, does not lie with the athletes themselves, but rather with other individuals who would accompany the team.
nRubio assured reporters that the US government has not extended an invitation to the Iranian team to withdraw from the tournament, addressing rumors to the contrary.
