Road hazard: Yobe SEMA warns motorists as highway is cut off

DAMATURU — The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has alerted motorists to a major road hazard along the Bauchi-Maiduguri highway following the cutting off of a significant portion of the road near the Darazo exit in Bauchi State.

SEMA issued the warning in a public alert posted on its official Facebook page on Sunday, September 27, 2026, urging motorists using the affected routes to exercise extreme caution.

According to the agency, “as of Sunday, 27th September 2026, a significant portion of the Bauchi–Maiduguri road has been cut off near the Darazo exit.”

It advised motorists travelling along the Bauchi-Yobe-Maiduguri route, as well as those travelling from Kano to Gombe, to “exercise extreme caution and take all necessary safety precautions.”

The warning comes amid the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecast of rain and thunderstorms across several parts of the country.

In its latest weather bulletin covering September 26 to 28, NiMet forecast thunderstorms and rainfall in several locations, including Bauchi, Gombe, Abuja, Kaduna, Jos, Makurdi, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Uyo, Owerri, Enugu, Akure and Abeokuta, among others.

For Bauchi, NiMet forecast thunderstorms during parts of Sunday, while Gombe was also expected to experience thunderstorm conditions.

However, partly cloudy conditions were forecast for Maiduguri and Potiskum.

NiMet has also identified areas with potential flash-flood risks in its September 21–30 outlook and urged stakeholders to use weather information for preparedness and early action.

The road disruption could pose additional risks to motorists, particularly amid wet-weather conditions that may affect visibility, road surfaces and travelling time.

SEMA urged motorists to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions while using the affected routes.

The agency concluded its alert with a warning to travellers: “Stay safe.”
