Rivers needs rescue, not godfathers — Blessing Fubara declares

The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Rivers State, Blessing Fubara, has said his ambition is driven by a mission to “rescue” the state from political instability and economic decline, insisting that he is not sponsored or controlled by any political godfather.

Speaking during a recent interview and a solidarity walk with supporters across the state, Fubara said his political backing comes from God and the people of Rivers State.

“I have God the Father, not a godfather,” he said, adding that Rivers State needs leadership focused on governance rather than political rivalry.

He said residents of the state are increasingly frustrated by prolonged political tensions that, according to him, have slowed development and diverted attention from governance.

Fubara argued that Rivers people deserve a new direction that restores hope, creates opportunities and strengthens public confidence in leadership.

He also said the state requires a new generation of leaders capable of addressing structural challenges and improving economic conditions.

According to him, entrenched political interests have contributed to underdevelopment and instability in the state, adding that his mission is to “restore Rivers State’s lost potential.”

The governorship candidate criticised what he described as the influence of godfatherism in politics, saying it undermines democratic growth and good governance.

He urged voters to reject political manipulation and focus on leaders committed to public welfare and service delivery.

Fubara said governance should take precedence over politics once elections are concluded, stressing the need for policies that attract investment and improve living standards.

He listed youth empowerment, women’s economic inclusion, and support for small and medium-scale enterprises as key priorities of his agenda.

He further emphasised the need to rebuild trust between government and citizens through people-centred policies.

Fubara said he remains committed to his party and would respect the outcome of the electoral process, describing his candidacy as a response to widespread demand for change in Rivers State.

Supporters who joined the solidarity walk expressed confidence in his leadership, describing him as a calm and credible candidate capable of delivering development and stability in the state.
