Rivers governor's faction reports PDP convention proceeds as planned, unfazed by legal warnings and internal divisions.

The National Caretaker Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, with the backing of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed its commitment to proceeding with the 2026 convention as scheduled, undeterred by purported court threats and internal divisions.

This upcoming convention is poised to be a critical test of the party's legitimacy and unity, given the presence of rival factions, legal uncertainties, and competing claims that could significantly impact the PDP's trajectory leading up to 2027.

During a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday, Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the spokesman for the NCWC, clearly articulated the party's stance, stating that all preparations for the convention had been completed.

Mohammed emphasized that the convention, scheduled for the following day, would be a pivotal moment for the PDP, reaffirming the party's commitment to democratic principles, respect for due process, and dedication to the will of the people.

He also underscored that all arrangements had been finalized, with the process designed to be credible, transparent, and inclusive, in accordance with party rules and national laws.

The NCWC spokesman assured party faithful and the general public that the convention would be conducted in full compliance with the party's constitution and relevant laws, emphasizing the party's adherence to established guidelines.

Despite rumors of potential court action, the PDP maintained that there was no concrete evidence and that it had not received any legal notice, with Mohammed stating that the convention would proceed as planned on 29 March.

The party drew a clear distinction between its process and that of a rival faction backed by Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, asserting that its convention was grounded in firm legal foundations.

Mohammed noted that the rival gathering lacked legal backing and was, in fact, restricted by a competent court, whereas the PDP's convention had the full support of the courts, the law, and the party members.

While acknowledging internal disagreements, the PDP downplayed the significance of the split, citing broad and growing support ahead of the convention and noting that even within an extended family, not everyone would be on the same page.

Mohammed stated that the party currently had the largest following within the party, and while reconciliation remained an option, the process would not be delayed to accommodate dissenting voices.

The party spokesman emphasized that individuals who felt aggrieved and chose not to align with the party's direction were within their constitutional rights to do so, underscoring the importance of moving forward with the convention.

The PDP also rejected claims of opacity in its nomination process, with Mohammed pushing back against critics who alleged a lack of awareness about the sale of forms, suggesting that such organizations might not be well-informed.

Mohammed acknowledged the role of Minister Nyesom Wike in providing a conducive environment for the convention, expressing gratitude for his support and reiterating the party's compliance with all regulations and processes.

He reaffirmed the party's commitment to proceeding with the convention, stating that all necessary steps had been taken and that, by the grace of God, the convention would take place as scheduled on 29 March, with the party being 100 per cent compliant with all requirements.
