Renovation Efforts Underway: Zamfara State Government Embarks on Overhaul of Ahmadu Bello University Medical Facility

Zamfara State Government has assumed control of the Medical Centre of Ahmadu Bello University, with the goal of rehabilitating and upgrading the facility, commonly referred to as Sickbay.

The takeover ceremony took place on Saturday, 25 July, 2026, at the medical centre, located within the Main Campus, ABU, Samaru, Zaria.

The contract for the rehabilitation and upgrade of the medical centre has been awarded to Lakeside Ventures Limited, with Dr Dauda Lawal, the Zamfara State governor, giving his approval for the project.

The project's approval was granted following a request by the university, submitted through the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, who sought the governor's intervention to rehabilitate and upgrade the medical facility.

The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by members of the University Management as he received a high-powered team from the Zamfara State Government, who attended the ceremony to mark the occasion.

Leading the delegation from Zamfara was Governor Lawal’s Special Adviser on Infrastructure and Urban Renewal, Arc. Ibrahim Mohammed Agige, who was joined by the Director, General Services, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Junaid Lamido.

A technical team from the Zamfara State Ministry of Works and Transport was also present, comprising the Director, Architecture and Building, Engr. Samaila Abdullahi Gurbi and Arc. Anas Maigari.

Mohammed Nuraddeen Lugga, the contractor for the project, was in attendance as well, representing Lakeside Ventures Limited.

According to Arc. Agige, Governor Lawal is committed to supporting initiatives like this one, which aim to improve education at his alma mater.

He emphasized that the project would commence promptly and assured that the work would be of high quality.

The contractor, Mr Lugga, expressed confidence in his company's ability to deliver excellent results.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that Governor Lawal's contributions to ABU go beyond those of a typical alumnus, and that he is, in fact, contributing to the legacy of the premier university.

Prof. Ahmed recalled that, after receiving the university's request for the project, Governor Lawal encouraged him to do more for the university, demonstrating his longstanding commitment to the institution.

The university's request for the rehabilitation and upgrade of the medical centre was motivated by the facility's high enrolment of NHIS members, according to Prof. Ahmed.
