Regional chiefs in South-East Nigeria seek diplomatic approach to secure Nnamdi Kanu's freedom – Umahi

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has revealed that South-East leaders are actively pursuing political solutions to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the IPOB, while also maintaining peace in the region.

Umahi made this statement during an inspection of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project in Epe, Lagos State, where he also declared that Ebonyi State does not align with the Obedient Movement and remains supportive of President Bola Tinubu.

The minister emphasized that no politician can attain the presidency through deception, instead stressing that credible leadership is built on truth, accountability, and a verifiable record of service.

Regarding reports that former Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi, plans to halt some of President Tinubu's legacy infrastructure projects if elected president, Umahi expressed regret over such a position, stating that Nigerians would reject it.

Umahi quoted his brother, Peter Obi, as saying he would stop the legacy projects, which he described as a painful statement, and hoped that Obi did not actually make such a comment.

He noted that leaders of the South-East are working towards peace and stability in the region, while seeking political solutions to issues affecting it, including supporting the governors in ensuring a peaceful South-East and exploring ways to help Nnamdi Kanu.

Umahi accused Obi of failing to openly address issues affecting the region, particularly insecurity and the Monday sit-at-home order enforced in parts of the South-East, which has resulted in the loss of thousands of lives.

He criticized Obi for not speaking out against the Monday sit-at-home order, and instead wanting to become President by all means, which Umahi believes is not good for the people.

Umahi described the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project as evidence of President Tinubu's vision for national development and economic growth, and challenged the Obedient Movement to compare the records of Tinubu and Obi during their respective tenures as governors.

He suggested comparing the master plans and projects created by Tinubu and Obi during their time as governors of Lagos and Anambra states, to evaluate their leadership and vision.

According to Umahi, ongoing infrastructure initiatives, including efforts to improve economic activities around the River Niger corridor, will unlock significant opportunities for the South-East and the country.

Umahi disclosed that Ebonyi State has endorsed President Tinubu's leadership and pledged his continued support for the administration, stating that he will not stop speaking out in defense of Nigerians and the people of the South-East.

He reaffirmed that Ebonyi State is not aligned with the Obedient Movement, and that the state's loyalty remains with President Bola Tinubu.
