Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, characterized his private meeting with Goodluck Jonathan on Monday as highly fruitful, revealing that the discussions centered on Nigeria's future prospects.
Obi, who was joined by a group of prominent South-East leaders at Jonathan's residence, stated that the meeting was part of his ongoing efforts to engage with key stakeholders in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
In a post on X following the meeting, Obi reflected on the talks, describing them as candid and thoughtful, with a focus on the pressing need to redirect Nigeria towards unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance.
According to Obi, the country's current challenges necessitate cooperation among leaders across regional lines, emphasizing that the time has come for collective action to address the nation's economic hardship, rising insecurity, and deepening social divisions.
Obi underscored the importance of leadership that prioritizes merit and service over personal ambition, asserting that Nigeria requires leaders guided by competence, character, capacity, and compassion rather than personal interests.
He further emphasized that effective governance should focus on creating opportunities rather than simply distributing existing resources, highlighting the need for a shift in the country's economic model towards production and utilization of human and natural resources.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Obi viewed the upcoming polls as a pivotal moment for the country, stressing that they should be seen as an opportunity to redefine Nigeria's trajectory.
Obi envisioned the 2027 elections as a chance to create a better future for Nigerian children, entrepreneurs, and citizens, who deserve access to quality education, a conducive business environment, and a secure and functional nation.
Obi was accompanied to the meeting by a delegation of Igbo elders, senators from the African Democratic Congress representing the South-East, and other political associates.
