Put party loyalty aside, back Tinubu, Lawan urges opposition lawmakers

Senator Ahmad Lawan, the former President of the Senate and current Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, has made a call to the opposition to put aside their partisan interests and support the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

This appeal was made on Tuesday when Lawan received a delegation from the City Boy Movement, Yobe State Chapter, at the National Assembly Complex, where he emphasized the importance of acknowledging and giving credit to the government when it is due.

Lawan stressed that the nation's progress should take precedence over party politics, and that constructive engagement and support for good policies must transcend party lines for the country to move forward.

He urged critics to support the administration when it implements policies that benefit Nigeria, saying that even if they do not believe in the APC's ideology, they should acknowledge and support the government when it does something positive.

Lawan noted that the country is at a critical point in its development, and that the opposition should support the administration when it is doing the right things.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Media, Ezrel Tabiowo, Lawan praised President Tinubu's courageous and determined leadership, and urged all Nigerians to rally behind the administration's efforts to reset the nation.

Lawan described President Tinubu as a leader who has worked hard for democracy and is now implementing reforms to improve Nigeria's situation, including making tough decisions that may not be popular but are necessary for the country's future.

As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Lawan highlighted the administration's achievements in the security sector, including the signing of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Bill and the reorganisation of the security architecture.

He also mentioned the recent approval of a substantial allowance increase for armed forces personnel as a significant stride worthy of commendation, and called for bipartisan support to address the country's security challenges.

Lawan also emphasized the importance of education, particularly in Northern Nigeria, and called on privileged youths to champion the campaign for basic education to reduce insecurity and improve the country's development.

He stressed that no investment in education is too much, and that the strict implementation of the UBEC Act 2004, which devotes 2% of the Consolidated Revenue Fund to education, is critical to Nigeria's development and reducing insecurity.

Lawan praised the developmental strides of Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, particularly his declaration of a state of emergency on education and the establishment of educational institutions.

He called for continued unity among stakeholders in the state to support the governor's efforts to improve education and development in Yobe State.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Dr. Muhammad Yakubu Hassan, briefed Lawan on the City Boy Movement's structure and plans, including grassroots mobilisation, empowerment initiatives, and town hall meetings to bring governance closer to the people.

Dr. Hassan outlined upcoming programs under the City Boy Movement, including the "Education for All" and "Health for All" initiatives, as well as community-driven projects to address basic needs at the ward level.

Lawan welcomed the delegation and assured them of his support, confirming his readiness to work with the movement and noting that he is already a patron of the Tinubu House-to-House Network.
