Prior to his new appointment, Lamido Abubakar Yuguda served as the director-general of the Securities and Exchange Commission from 2020 to 2024, bringing a wealth of experience to his new role as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, a position subject to Senate confirmation as approved by President Bola Tinubu.

n

President Tinubu's approval of Yuguda's appointment is in line with the requirements outlined in Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, ensuring a seamless transition in the bank's leadership.

n

The vacancy for the Deputy Governor position arose following the appointment of the former Deputy Governor, Mr Bala Bello, as Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy, as announced by the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, in a recent statement.

n

According to the statement, President Tinubu has tasked the newly appointed officials, including Yuguda, to carry out their duties with renewed dedication, professionalism, and a strong commitment to Nigeria's economic stability and growth.

n

Lamido Yuguda's academic background includes a B.Sc. in Accountancy from Ahmadu Bello University, which he completed in 1983, as well as a master's degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, obtained in 1991.

n

Yuguda is a distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and also holds a CFA charterholder designation, underscoring his expertise in the field of finance and accounting.

n

His professional career began in 1984 at the Central Bank of Nigeria, where he worked as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department, marking the start of a long and accomplished tenure in the banking sector.

n

Between 1997 and 2001, Yuguda worked as an economist in the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund, before returning to the Central Bank of Nigeria, where he eventually retired in 2016 after serving as Director of the Reserve Management Department for six years.
