Police Headquarters Directs Punitive Measures Against Officer Who Intimidated Citizens for Recording

The Nigeria Police Force has taken notice of a viral video circulating on social media, which features ASP Newton Isokpehi making threatening remarks against members of the public who are filming police activities.

The officer in question has been identified and summoned to the Anambra State Command Headquarters, where disciplinary procedures have commenced immediately.

According to Force Public Relations Officer DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the conduct and utterances exhibited in the video are unacceptable and inconsistent with the ethics and code of conduct of the Nigeria Police Force.

Such actions are contrary to the ongoing reform initiatives of the Force, which aim to promote transparency, accountability, professionalism, and citizen-focused policing.

IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu has maintained that the public has the right to lawfully record police officers carrying out their duties, as long as the recording does not obstruct operations or compromise safety.

The officer involved has been identified and summoned to the Anambra State Command Headquarters, where immediate disciplinary procedures have commenced, in line with the IGP's position.

The Nigeria Police Force does not tolerate threats, intimidation, abuse of office, or any conduct that can undermine public trust and confidence in law enforcement institutions.

Recording police activities is a legitimate tool for public accountability and transparency, and it should not attract harassment or intimidation from police personnel, the Force reiterates.
