Poland 2026: Nigeria's Falconets Secure 2-0 Victory Over Malawi in Ikenne, Set Sights on Lilongwe Triumph

Nigeria's U-20 girls, the Falconets, delivered a commanding performance, fashioning numerous scoring chances as they secured a 2-0 victory over their Malawian counterparts in the first leg of a FIFA U20 Women's World Cup final round fixture held in Ikenne-Remo on Saturday.

This win significantly bolstered Nigeria's prospects of securing another spot in the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup, a tournament in which they have participated continuously since its inception as an U19 competition in Canada in 2002.

The match required Coach Moses Adukwu to adjust his tactics after the first 45 minutes, during which the Falconets created ample opportunities but struggled to find the net, partly due to the impressive goalkeeping display by Malawi's Emily Nkhwazi.

From the outset, Nigeria dominated territorially, utilizing the width of the pitch and forcing Malawi's 'Young Scorchers' into a deep defensive position, but despite their intricate build-up play and attacking intent, they failed to score in the first half.

Malawi's defense remained resolute, absorbing the pressure and ensuring that the hosts entered the interval without a goal to show for their dominance, despite creating many scoring chances.

The dynamics of the game shifted almost immediately after the restart, with Nigeria adopting a higher tempo and more direct approach, which ultimately led to the breakthrough in the 47th minute.

A well-delivered ball into the danger zone caused chaos in the Malawian defense, resulting in Maureen Kenneth inadvertently scoring an own goal that sparked Nigeria's momentum.

Ten minutes later, the stadium erupted again as Faridat Abdulwahab provided a pinpoint assist to Kindness Ifeanyi, who clinically scored the second goal, giving the Falconets a well-deserved two-goal cushion.

Malawi attempted a late comeback, but Nigeria's defensive structure remained solid, allowing them to maintain their two-goal advantage and gain the upper hand in the fixture ahead of the second leg.

The Falconets' victory earned them a cash prize of 1 Million Naira from Hon. Kunle Soname, the President of Remo Stars FC and Beyond Limits Football Academy, who had promised the team 500,000 Naira for each goal scored before the match.

The return leg is scheduled to take place at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday, 9th May, with kickoff set for 3pm Malawi time, which is 2pm in Nigeria.
