Pochettino expresses frustration, insists Balogun controversy didn't justify USA's World Cup elimination

Mauricio Pochettino, the US coach, expressed his disappointment and frustration over the backlash surrounding Folarin Balogun's ban, yet maintained it was not a justification for the team's World Cup exit at the hands of Belgium on Monday.

Despite earning a red card in the previous game, striker Balogun was cleared by FIFA to play in the crucial round-of-16 clash, following a call by US President Donald Trump to soccer's global governing body.

FIFA claimed the decision was not influenced by Trump, but the ensuing controversy dominated the final days of the US World Cup campaign, with Pochettino forced to defend Balogun's eligibility for the game that ended in a 4-1 loss in Seattle.

Pochettino stated, "I am so frustrated and so disappointed with the people who are supposed to understand this situation," accusing critics of "mixing" politics with FIFA's decision, and emphasizing that it did not affect the team's performance.

He declared, "it's not an excuse, and we cannot put excuses, it wasn't our day," highlighting that the team's poor performance was not due to the controversy surrounding Balogun's eligibility.

Pochettino questioned the purpose of the criticism, asking "what is the point" of receiving bad messages or threats, when his position as head coach was simply to follow the rules and have Balogun available for the game.

He reiterated that his role was to train the team, and if FIFA's disciplinary committee allowed Balogun to play, then it was not a problem, and he felt personally disappointed with the criticism from many people.

Balogun, the top US scorer with three goals, started the game against Belgium but failed to make a significant impact.

The US team appeared to be a shadow of their former selves, having made a promising start to the tournament on home soil, which had initially raised the hopes of the American public for a deep run into the World Cup.
