Plateau Violence: When will it end? - Jang calls for immediate intervention

Former Plateau State Governor and Senator representing Plateau North, Jonah Jang, has vehemently denounced the brutal attack on Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area, which resulted in the loss of at least 28 lives on Palm Sunday.

The assault, which took place in the heart of Jos on a day traditionally reserved for peace and contemplation, has left the community reeling in shock and grief, with numerous residents still grappling to come to terms with the tragedy.

Several others were injured in the attack and are currently undergoing medical treatment in various hospitals, underscoring the devastating impact of the incident on the community.

In a statement released on Tuesday by his media aide, Clinton Garuba, Jang characterized the perpetrators as "agents of darkness" driven by a desire to spread fear and undermine progress in the state.

Jang's statement posed a poignant question, "For how long shall these killings continue?" while also emphasizing that the victims were not just statistics, but 28 individuals with promising futures, dreams, and potential that were brutally cut short.

The senator extended his condolences to the families of the bereaved and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured, urging the people of Plateau State to remain united and resilient in the face of adversity.

Jang called for greater proactive measures from security agencies, highlighting the need for improved intelligence gathering and a shift from reactive to preventive strategies in response to the brazen attack in the state capital.

He recalled his earlier advocacy for state police during his tenure as governor, which was met with criticism at the time, but noted that recent developments have underscored the importance of such a measure.

Jang commended President Bola Tinubu for taking steps towards addressing the issue of state policing and urged him to expedite the process, empowering governors to effectively tackle insecurity.

The senator appealed to youths to remain calm and avoid reprisals, despite their grief and anger, while also calling on security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice.

Jang emphasized that the terrorists appear to be evolving new tactics, and therefore, the government must reassess its operational strategy to counter them, stressing that justice must not only be served but also be seen to be done as a deterrent.
