Plateau State Violence: Governor Mutfwang Says Perpetrators Remain Unidentified

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang revealed on Wednesday that the state and security agencies have yet to identify the perpetrators of the Sunday killing in Angwam.

He made this disclosure while responding to questions from journalists after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the presidential Villa in Abuja, where he briefed the President on the developments and measures taken so far by the state government.

According to Governor Mutfwang, the situation that unfolded on Sunday evening was unfortunate, but it has been brought under control, with corpses evacuated to the mortuary and some families having already buried their loved ones.

A curfew was imposed, which was relaxed on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., but looters attempted to disrupt the peace, only to be calmed down by security forces by 12 p.m., resulting in the situation being well under control.

Governor Mutfwang stated that his meeting with President Tinubu was to brief him on the events, the steps taken, and to offer suggestions on the way forward, including plans to take certain steps agreed upon during a Security Council meeting.

The President has agreed to the proposed steps and has expressed his condolences to the state, contemplating a personal visit to commiserate with the people, while also approving measures to be taken in conjunction with security forces.

Governor Mutfwang assured that this marks a decisive turning point, with more proactive actions expected in the future.

When asked how he could correct the impression and provide a true picture of the events as the Chief Security Officer of the state, Governor Mutfwang explained that a crisis of this nature cannot be reduced to a single reason, but rather a mixture of multiple reasons.

The actual reasons can only be deduced by interacting with both the victims and the attackers, but unfortunately, the attackers' identities and motives remain unknown, with the victims' accounts being the only insight into the incident.

The governor condemned the act as barbaric, an act of terrorism, and criminality, emphasizing that no religion justifies such actions, and expressing hope that going forward, such actions will be treated as criminality and prevented from happening again.
