Plateau State Legislature Moves Forward with Proposal to Enhance Independence of Lawmaking Body

The Plateau State House of Assembly has given the green light to a bill aimed at repealing and re-enacting the Plateau State House of Assembly Service Commission Law, following its second reading, as sponsored by Hon. Dr. Aliyu Adamu, the representative of Jos North North Constituency.

This legislative move is designed to bring the Commission's governing law up to date and grant the state legislature greater autonomy in its administrative operations, according to the proposal put forth by Dr. Adamu.

During the plenary session, Dr. Adamu outlined the benefits of the proposed legislation, which includes replacing outdated provisions with a comprehensive framework to boost efficiency, transparency, and accountability.

The re-enacted law, as explained by Dr. Adamu, would grant the Commission the authority to effectively manage various aspects of legislative staff, including recruitment, appointments, promotions, discipline, and welfare.

Additionally, the bill encompasses provisions for training legislative staff, building their capacity, and facilitating career progression, further enhancing the Commission's capabilities.

The motion to proceed with the second reading was supported by Hon. Mark Sunday Na’ah, who represents Jos North West Constituency, with lawmakers praising the initiative and its potential to fortify the House's administrative structure and operational efficiency.

Speaker Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel instructed the Clerk to read the bill for a second time, after which it was referred to the relevant committee for further examination and consideration.
