Plateau State government strengthens prohibition on motorbike use following Jos violence

Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau has instructed security operatives to rigorously enforce the ban on motorcycle operations within Jos metropolis as a measure to prevent further attacks, emphasizing his administration's unwavering stance against intimidation.

Mutfwang issued this directive during a statewide broadcast on Tuesday in Jos, where he also conveyed his condolences to the people of Plateau over the recent attack on Angwan-Rukuba, a community in Jos, which occurred on Sunday and resulted in deaths and destruction.

The attack claimed the lives of 28 individuals, including women, children, and students, and also left some injured, according to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

In his address, the governor urged citizens to find solace in their faith, assuring them that his government would take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

With a deep sense of sorrow, Mutfwang expressed his grief over the loss of 28 innocent lives and the injuries sustained by many others, acknowledging the pain and anguish of the bereaved families.

As part of its efforts to bolster security, the government has convened a State Security Council meeting to review and reinforce its security architecture, aiming to make it more proactive and responsive to emerging threats.

Mutfwang directed security agencies to strictly enforce the law banning commercial motorcycle operators within the Jos greater master plan, with the commissioner of police set to issue detailed guidelines on the matter.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to tackling insecurity, assuring residents that his administration would not be intimidated and urging all citizens to remain law-abiding as the government works to secure the state.

Despite the recent security breach, Mutfwang assured the people of Plateau that the state would not succumb to fear or intimidation, and instead would emerge stronger, united, and resolute in its commitment to peace.

The governor emphasized the need to deploy all available resources to defend the people, protect lives and property, and safeguard the territorial integrity of the state, ensuring that Plateau remains strong and peaceful.

Mutfwang commended community leaders, youths, and residents of Angwan-Rukuba, as well as the wider Plateau populace, for their restraint and refusal to retaliate in the face of provocation, appreciating their maturity and commitment to peace.

The governor urged all citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or activities to the relevant security agencies, stressing that security is a collective responsibility and that every necessary measure is being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and safeguard lives and property across the state.
