Plateau State authorities launch crackdown on unauthorized mining operations, confiscate machinery in Jos

In a concerted bid to crack down on illicit mining activities, the Plateau State Government has intensified its efforts, seizing equipment and issuing stern warnings to offenders during a recent joint operation conducted in the state.

According to Peter Gwom, the Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change and Mineral Development, the extensive land degradation resulting from these unlawful mining practices is a pressing concern that warrants immediate attention.

Represented by Samuel Jaryum, the Director of Exploration and Gemological Services, Gwom underscored the persistent challenges that the state faces, notwithstanding the commitment of Governor Caleb Mutfwang's administration to safeguarding lives and fostering prosperity.

The ministry has expressed deep concern over the escalating number of fatalities linked to these clandestine mining operations, as well as the growing population of out-of-school children in areas prone to mining within the state capital, with Gwom stating that "the ministry remains worried about the rising number of deaths linked to illegal mining operations, as well as the increasing population of out-of-school children in mining-prone areas within the state capital,".

A joint team, comprising representatives from the state government and the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, conducted a thorough inspection of several sites, including Zawan, Rayfield Resort, Lamingo Dam, and Yingi Reserved areas, where illicit mining activities were rampant.

During the operation, the team recovered a range of equipment, including generator pumping machines, pickaxes, and other mining tools, which were seized as part of the crackdown on these unlawful activities.

The team strongly condemned the practice of mining within residential areas, particularly near Lamingo Dam, citing the severe environmental and safety risks associated with such activities, and urged the public to desist from these practices immediately.

The ministry has called upon individuals interested in engaging in mining activities to formalise their operations, register with the ministry, obtain the necessary licence, and adhere to global best practices, in order to ensure that mining is conducted in a safe and responsible manner.
