Plateau Assembly Leader Calls for Calm, Praises Mutfwang's Handling of Recent Violence

Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Naanlong Daniel, has appealed to residents to exercise restraint and avoid reprisal attacks following the recent killings in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, and signed by his Press Secretary, Philip Eplong, the Speaker described the incident as “quite unfortunate and a painful setback” to the peace and stability of the state.

He expressed deep concern over the loss of innocent lives and called for sober reflection, collective responsibility, and renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence among all residents.

Naanlong Daniel commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his swift response, particularly his prompt visit to the affected community and immediate interventions aimed at restoring order and reassuring citizens.

“The future of our state depends on the commitment of our youths to peace, discipline, and constructive engagement,” the Speaker said, urging young people to resist any attempt by mischief-makers to exploit the situation for violence or reprisal attacks.

He cautioned residents against spreading unverified rumours that could escalate tension and urged them to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive of security agencies working to restore normalcy.

The Speaker assured that the Plateau State House of Assembly will continue to work closely with the executive arm and relevant security authorities to strengthen coordination, support peace-building initiatives, and ensure adequate protection of lives and property across the state.

He further called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, and other stakeholders to intensify efforts in promoting unity, love, and tolerance at the grassroots level.

Daniel expressed confidence that with continued collaboration and collective commitment from all stakeholders, lasting peace will be sustained in Plateau State.

The appeal by the Speaker comes amid heightened tension in Jos following the deadly gunmen attack on Angwan Rukuba community on Palm Sunday, which claimed at least 28 lives.

The state government had earlier imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North, which was later relaxed, but fresh incidents of hoodlum attacks were reported in some parts of the city after the relaxation.

Governor Mutfwang had visited the scene and announced government support for medical bills and burials of victims, and directed security agencies to adopt proactive, intelligence-led operations.
