People's Democratic Party chooses Nwogbo to run for Enugu State Governor in 2027 election

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Enugu State, elected Hon Dona Nwogbo as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election on Thursday, a move that marks a significant milestone in the party's preparations for the upcoming polls.

Dr. Yarima Idachaba, the returning officer for the election in the state, announced the results of the primary elections, which included national and state assembly positions, and expressed satisfaction with the turnout and the fact that the elections were conducted without violence.

The State Chairman of the party, Hon. Steve Oruruo, described the primary election process as the culmination of direct primaries held across wards in the state, which reflected the quality the PDP seeks to present to the electorate.

Oruruo characterized the exercise as “glamorous” and noted that it marked the end of elections in terms of primaries, with the final collation of results from different wards via direct primaries yielding a successful outcome.

He emphasized that the process was conducted without rancour and with a sense of equity and fairness, underscoring the importance of the quality of leadership recruitment in determining the quality of governance.

Oruruo argued that the “warped value and poor leadership threat” witnessed in recent years are often the result of flawed primary election processes, but noted that the PDP had presented a primary devoid of rancour, quarrel, and skirmishes.

Addressing the leadership of the party in Enugu, Oruruo stated that the PDP had not experienced any crisis in the state, citing a court judgment and a Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the control of the party by the Board of Trustees, BOT, led by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara.

He pointed out that the court had secured a judgment that has never been vacated, establishing the leadership of the party in the state, and that the Supreme Court had further reinforced this position in its final judgment.

Oruruo warned that any process contrary to the Supreme Court’s position would be “null and void and of no effect”, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the rule of law in party affairs.
