PDP Leadership Dispute: Board of Trustees Forms Panel to Broker Peace

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) has established a special committee to collaborate with the party's legal team and stakeholders, aiming to facilitate internal reconciliation.

This decision was revealed in a communiqué issued on Wednesday in Abuja, following a two-day expanded emergency meeting chaired by Sen. Adolphus Wabara, the board chairman.

The special committee's primary objective is to address the leadership crisis triggered by the Court of Appeal's March 9 judgement, as well as to enable the party to field candidates for the 2026 general elections.

The Appeal Court judgement had nullified the party's November 2025 National Convention, which resulted in the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC).

The PDP BoT has expressed disagreement with the appellate court's judgement and is currently awaiting formal guidance from its lawyers on the next course of action.

The communiqué highlighted the party's concern over the avoidable internal leadership disputes and wrangling that led to damaging litigations, ultimately affecting the unity of the main opposition party.

The board has resolved to explore the reconciliation window provided by the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division, and is committed to taking immediate steps to reconcile all stakeholders, end disputes, and restore the party to good health.

The BoT is mindful of the interests and aspirations of its members who are eager to contest various positions in the 2027 general elections.

The communiqué acknowledged the loyalty of Nigerians to the party, citing the ongoing nationwide e-registration exercise, which has seen a daily surge in registration with members joining in their millions.

The unprecedented influx of members to the party, despite the challenges, underscores the PDP's standing as the party of choice for the majority of Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.

The board has called on all leaders and members to set aside personal and group interests and unite as one family in the overall interest of the party.

Pursuant to Section 32 of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), the party has unanimously approved the appointment of Dr Babangida Aliyu as the Secretary of the Board.

The board commended Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for their commitment and steadfastness toward the party's stability.

The board urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, stating that the PDP is working hard to reposition itself to rescue the nation.
