PDP calls on Governor Eno to refrain from politicizing the development of Ibom Deep Seaport project

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has been urged by the Peoples Democratic Party to refrain from politicizing the Ibom Deep Seaport, a state project that has been delayed for a long time and has consumed a significant amount of funds under various administrations.

This call was made by the PDP Advocates for Peace and Justice, also known as PAPA-J, in response to Governor Eno's recent public appeal to President Bola Tinubu to fulfill his promise to deliver the seaport.

The appeal was made during a visit by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and was described as unnecessary and misleading by PAPA-J in a statement signed by Dr. Tom FredFish, Chairman, and Savour Uko, Secretary.

The PDP noted that the Federal Government had already given approval for the project during the administration of former Governor Udom Emmanuel, including the license for Akwa Ibom State to develop and operate the deep seaport.

It is unclear what further action Governor Eno expects from President Tinubu, as the party pointed out that federal approval has already been granted, making the governor's remarks seem unwarranted.

The state government had recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Interaf Group Consortium to advance the seaport and the adjoining Ibom Industrial City, with the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, signing on behalf of Governor Eno.

The PDP argued that instead of making repeated public appeals, Governor Eno should take practical steps to attract investors and drive the project forward, as a consortium has already been engaged.

According to the party, governance requires initiative, planning, and execution, rather than making political statements that suggest the Federal Government is responsible for a project that lies within the operational remit of the state.

PAPA-J also reminded Governor Eno of his 2023 campaign statements, in which he expressed skepticism about federal involvement in the seaport, and questioned the apparent shift in his position.

The PDP concluded that Governor Eno must stop playing politics with the Ibom Deep Seaport and focus on delivering the project, as the people of Akwa Ibom are tired of speeches and want tangible progress.
