Sacrificial lambs, like those in biblical times, are often used to save people or situations for the greater good, and it is expected that those who benefit from their sacrifice show appreciation and gratitude.

Jean-Jacques Ndala Ngambo, a FIFA-listed Congolese football referee, has become a modern-day example of a sacrificial lamb after handling the contentious 2025 AFCON final in Morocco, a match that has gone down in history as the most controversial in the competition's history since its inception in 1957.

Ndala's FIFA listing and recognition by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to officiate the AFCON final, which drew six billion digital viewers worldwide, demonstrate his competence as a referee, and he should have been aware that his decisions are final and binding.

According to the rules of football officiating, a referee's decision is absolute, and even if the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) or Match Assessors later deem it incorrect, the result of the match remains unchanged, but CAF's actions have deviated from this norm.

CAF, led by South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe, has been attempting to placate football stakeholders across the continent after the controversy, while Ndala may have inadvertently damaged his own reputation by following instructions from high-ranking CAF officials to continue the match despite Senegal's walk-off protest.

Reports suggest that Ndala initially intended to stop the match and potentially end it immediately when Senegalese players walked off in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco in the 98th minute, but was instructed to continue, ultimately leading to Morocco's loss and Senegal's victory in extra time.

Ndala's role as a sacrificial lamb was not only to save face for CAF but also to legitimize Morocco's preferred win, but the plan backfired when Morocco's Brahim Diaz missed the penalty and Senegal scored in extra time, leading to CAF awarding them the trophy in the presence of the FIFA president.

However, Morocco later realized that the rules had been flouted, and the officials who allegedly instructed Ndala to disregard the rules fell silent, with Senegal becoming the scapegoat to appease Morocco and maintain CAF's hosting rights in the country.

CAF's decision to strip Senegal of the title and award it to Morocco has been met with resistance, as Senegal claims they are the rightful champions and has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which has yet to decide on the matter.

CAF President Motsepe has publicly stated that the continental body will respect the CAS decision, but has initiated diplomatic efforts between Senegal and Morocco, while also addressing Senegal's allegations of corruption within CAF, promising to cooperate with any investigations.
