PASAN distances itself from demonstration by National Assembly employees

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), National Assembly Chapter, has publicly disassociated itself from a protest staged by a group calling itself “Concerned Staff of the National Assembly”, deeming the action as unauthorized and not aligning with the union's stance.

Acting Chairman of PASAN’s National Assembly Chapter, Comrade Mathias Obaje, issued a rejoinder and disclaimer on Tuesday, stating that the union did not authorize or endorse the protest and urging the public to disregard any claims to the contrary.

The statement clarified that the actions and pronouncements of the group do not reflect the objectives, aspirations, or official position of PASAN and its members, emphasizing a clear disconnect between the two entities.

The principal actors behind the protest, according to the union, are no longer recognized members of PASAN, having been suspended by the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) during a meeting in Bauchi, Bauchi State.

As a result of their suspension, these individuals lack the authority to act, speak, or make representations on behalf of PASAN or its members, as stated by the union.

PASAN expressed gratitude to the National Assembly management for efforts aimed at improving staff welfare and working conditions, acknowledging their willingness to address workers’ concerns through dialogue and established channels.

The union reiterated its commitment to advancing the interests of parliamentary staff, emphasizing its dedication to constructive engagement and lawful advocacy in pursuit of improved welfare for its members.

National Assembly staff were urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused on their official duties, with a warning against activities that could disrupt industrial harmony within the legislature.

PASAN advised members and the general public to disregard any unauthorized directives, publications, or actions that could undermine the peace and stability currently enjoyed in the National Assembly Service.

The union reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing staff welfare through recognized mechanisms of engagement, in line with its constitution, labour laws, and administrative procedures.

PASAN assured the National Assembly management of its continued cooperation in sustaining industrial peace, institutional stability, and improved welfare for workers within the parliamentary service.
