Oyetola and colleagues set to explore eco-friendly ports and seafarers' benefits at upcoming 2026 Shipping and Cargo Agents Network event

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, will be joined by notable figures, including Adewale Adeyanju, the immediate past President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, and Aminu Umar, President of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, at the 2026 Shipping Correspondent Association of Nigeria Dockworkers’ Day to explore sustainable practices and improved welfare standards for dockworkers at Nigerian seaports.

The event, scheduled for June 4th at Rockview Hotels in Apapa, is themed "Green Ports: Sustainable Practices for Dockworkers," and aims to spark discussions on environmentally responsible port operations, the adoption of efficiency-enhancing technologies, and the need to improve working conditions for dockworkers.

According to the Shipping Correspondent Association of Nigeria, the initiative seeks to align Nigeria's port operations with global environmental standards while ensuring dockworkers are not left behind in the transition to greener and technology-driven maritime systems.

In a joint statement, SCAN President Moses Ebosele and Chairman of the Organising Committee Yusuf Babalola emphasized that the annual Dockworkers’ Day has remained a vital platform for recognizing the contribution of dockworkers to the nation's economy.

The statement also highlighted that the event will address emerging environmental and operational challenges facing Nigeria's maritime sector, underscoring the importance of sustainable practices in the industry.

SCAN noted that as the global maritime industry continues to evolve, there is a growing need to equip dockworkers with the necessary skills and tools to adapt to green port initiatives and digital transformation in shipping operations, a key aspect of the event's agenda.

Aminu Umar is expected to deliver the keynote address at the event, while Adewale Adeyanju, who also serves as Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, will chair the occasion.

Goodwill messages are anticipated from key stakeholders, including the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, the Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, and the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Shippers’ Council, among others.
