Osun poll: Top NDC official urges INEC and law enforcement to ensure a free and tranquil vote

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure a fair and peaceful election in the Aug.15 governorship election in Osun

Mr Ladipo Johnson, NDC candidate for Lagos Central Senatorial District, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday .

He said the election presented another opportunity for INEC to prove its independence and ability to conduct credible elections in Nigeria.

“This election is a major test for INEC before the 2027 general elections. However, INEC alone cannot do it; security agencies and all stakeholders must ensure a level playing field for all political parties,” he said.

According to him, the ruling party at the national level must avoid using state institutions to frustrate opposition parties during campaigns and elections.

He expressed hope that if all stakeholders play by the rules, Nigerians would have more confidence in the electoral process going forward.

On the role of citizens, Johnson urged eligible voters in Osun to come out en masse and vote, saying high voter turnout would reduce the chances of electoral manipulation.

“The more people that vote, the more difficult it becomes for anyone to rig the election. Citizens must take ownership of the process,” he said.

He also advised young people not to allow themselves to be used as political thugs, warning that short-term gains from politicians would not translate into good governance.

“Do not reduce your future to what you get on election day. Stomach infrastructure cannot replace good governance,” he said.

Johnson further appealed to politicians to shun violence, stressing that public office is about service and not a do-or-die affair.

“Once politics becomes violent, it is no longer service. It becomes a struggle for control of public resources,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the will of the people would prevail in the election and prayed for a peaceful process.

“I wish the people of Osun well. I pray that their choice will stand and bring development to the state,” he added.

He also urged INEC, security agencies and other institutions involved in the election not to disappoint.

n

“If they remain committed to their constitutional duty, we will have a free and fair election,”he said.

Johnson wished Osun residents a peaceful poll and expressed hope that the outcome would lead to greater prosperity for the state.
