Osun Election: Senator Fadeyi quits APC, returns to PDP

OSOGBO — Senator Olubiyi Fadeyi, representing Osun Central Senatorial District, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Fadeyi was among the federal lawmakers who defected from the PDP to the APC but failed to secure the party’s senatorial ticket for the 2027 election.

The APC ticket for Osun Central was won by Rasheed Adegoke (SAN), a development that sparked protests by some of Fadeyi’s supporters, who demanded that the ticket be returned to the incumbent senator.

Unlike Fadeyi, other former PDP lawmakers who joined the APC, including Senator Francis Fadahunsi and members of the House of Representatives, Wole Oke, Taofeek Ajilesoro and Sanya Omirin, secured the party’s tickets to seek re-election.

In his resignation letter, Fadeyi said his decision to leave the APC followed what he described as the party’s failure to honour an agreement that he would emerge as the consensus candidate for the Osun Central senatorial seat.

He said he joined the APC in good faith to support President Bola Tinubu in his home state, believing assurances that he would receive the party’s ticket.

“I believed those understandings would be honoured and that the party would uphold the principles of fairness, equity, mutual respect and internal democracy,” he said.

The senator alleged that the process for selecting candidates departed from the agreed consensus arrangement and lacked transparency, leading to a loss of confidence in the party’s leadership in Osun State.

He also expressed disappointment that while other lawmakers who defected with him secured return tickets, he was denied the opportunity to contest for another term.

Despite his exit from the APC, Fadeyi stressed that his support for President Tinubu and the Renewed Hope Agenda remained unwavering.

“I wish to state unequivocally that I remain one hundred per cent committed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and supportive of the Renewed Hope Agenda. My decision is not in opposition to the President, his administration or his vision for Nigeria,” he said.

According to him, his decision was guided by what he described as the need to uphold democratic principles and protect the political mandate entrusted to him by the people of Osun Central Senatorial District.
