Ohanaeze Condemns Turmoil Among Igbo Communities in London and South Africa

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the premier Igbo socio-cultural organisation, has vehemently denounced the violent attacks on innocent individuals and the destruction of property in East London and South Africa, which were sparked by the installation of an Igbo traditional ruler.

In a statement released in Enugu by Dr Ezechi Chukwu, the National Publicity Secretary of the organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide expressed its profound dismay at the recent unrest linked to the reported installation of an "Igwe Ndigbo na East London".

The statement, made available to newsmen on Wednesday, condemned the unwarranted attacks on innocent persons and the destruction of property, while also expressing deep concern over the resulting disturbances.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide called on the relevant authorities to take necessary steps to prevent further escalation of the situation, highlighting the need for prompt action to restore peace and order.

The organisation reaffirmed that the Igbo people are renowned globally for their peaceful nature, entrepreneurial spirit, and respect for the laws of their host communities, values that are deeply ingrained in their culture.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide dissociated itself from any actions that contravene the laws, customs, and traditions of host countries, emphasizing its commitment to upholding the principles of peaceful coexistence.

The organisation clarified that, to the best of its knowledge, the installation in East London was merely a nominal observance, as it was not backed by any law, and therefore lacked any legal basis.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, in alignment with the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers, does not recognise the conferment of the "Eze Ndigbo" title outside the Igbo land, and has advised its diaspora communities to adopt non-kingship designations to avoid misrepresentation.

The Igbo umbrella body specifically advised its diaspora communities to use designations such as "Onyendu" for their internal organisation, in order to avoid any potential misrepresentation or conflict.

The statement urged the Igbo people in diaspora to continue conducting themselves with discipline, dignity, and full respect for the laws and traditions of their host countries, values that are essential for harmonious coexistence.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide called on the Government and people of South Africa to uphold the longstanding spirit of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect between Nigerians and South Africans, which has been a hallmark of their relations.

The organisation appealed for calm, mutual respect, and constructive engagement among all parties involved, in order to resolve the situation peacefully and avoid any further escalation.
