Ogun State to shut down unauthorized bus station, ban roadside vendors at Sango toll plaza in bid to reduce recurring crashes

The Ogun Government has unveiled plans to relocate the unauthorized motor park and put an end to street trading at Sango Tollgate, in a bid to reduce the frequency of road accidents at the Ogun–Lagos border.

Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya made this announcement during a visit to the area, accompanied by officials from the ministry, the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, and the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government.

This development was disclosed in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Friday by the Public Relations Officer of the ministry, Mr Rotimi Oduniyi.

According to Oresanya, the inspection was prompted by Governor Dapo Abiodun, due to growing concerns over the recurring accidents and loss of lives at the busy border tollgate.

The government has resolved to relocate interstate buses and traders, who have been operating illegally at the location for over 25 years, to more organized locations away from the tollgate.

Barricades will be constructed on both sides of the tollgate to prevent the return of these buses and traders, and the Ogun State Waste Management Authority will carry out a thorough clean-up of the area.

Officials from the Ado-Odo/Ota local government and environmental marshals will be responsible for enforcing compliance with the new order.

The relocation and enforcement exercise is set to commence in a few days, according to the commissioner.

Oresanya stated that he had received a directive from Governor Dapo Abiodun to investigate and find a lasting solution to the unfortunate and avoidable accidents at the tollgate.

Following a careful review of the situation, the state government has decided to relocate the illegal motor park and eradicate street trading, in an effort to prevent further accidents.

To prevent the interstate buses and street traders from returning to the spot, the state government will construct barricades on both sides of the tollgate area, in conjunction with the local government.

The relocation and eradication exercise will commence in a few days, as announced by the commissioner.
