Ogun State Police Initiate Investigation Following Death of Youth Corps Member Allegedly Linked to Botched Abortion Procedure

An investigation has been launched by the Ogun State Police Command into the death of Victoria Ariyo, a female corps member serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, following confirmation of the incident on Thursday.

Ariyo's death is believed to have resulted from complications related to an abortion procedure, although a full investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding her demise.

Prior to her death, Ariyo had reportedly undergone a pregnancy termination, which ultimately led to the development of complications that proved fatal.

Funeral arrangements for the deceased have already been concluded, with her remains interred at Kobape Cemetery, located along the Kobape–Sagamu road in Abeokuta.

This incident occurs roughly a month after the mysterious death of another corps member, Adeleye Mary, who was also serving in the same local government area.

Mary, who was attached to a television station in the state capital until her death, was found lifeless in her residence, which is situated close to her primary place of assignment.

The cause of Mary's death remains undetermined, with sources indicating that her lifeless body was discovered in her apartment, and to date, no explanation for her demise has been provided.

It is understood that both deceased corps members, Ariyo and Mary, were close friends, having served in the same local government area.

A source familiar with the incidents revealed that Mary's lifeless body was discovered in her apartment, while Ariyo's death was attributed to complications arising from an abortion procedure.

An NYSC official, believed to have been in a romantic relationship with the late Ariyo, resulting in the pregnancy and subsequent abortion, has been taken into custody by the police at the State Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.

When approached for comment, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident but declined to comment on the alleged arrest, stating that the case is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State NYSC Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Igba, claimed to be unaware of the incidents, citing that he is currently on leave and will not resume until April.

Efforts to reach the State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Olayinka Nasamu, were unsuccessful, as calls to her aide went unanswered, and messages sent at the time of filing this report had yet to receive a response.
